Image file is one of the most consistent parts of operating system that stores the digital photos and images. In this the image files are generally composed of vector or pixels data that are rasterized to pixel when displayed in vector graphic display. In this the pixels are arranged in row and column format and constitutes of number that represents magnitude of color and brightness. Three most important image files that are used printing, internet and scanning are TIF, GIF and JPG but TIF will not be used in Internet browser.
But there are situation in which the Image file might fail to display the images properly because of the fact that it becomes corrupted and lacks to display the image data. This problem generally occurs because the programmer misinterprets the file format specification, hence unable to understand the programming language that is being used. But this does not mean that user will be unable to access the images as such the corruption may be resolved efficiently.
.3dm - Known as “Rhino 3D Model”, basically it is three dimensional model that has been created with the help of 3D modeling application. This extension uses NURBS that are helpful in representing 3D shapes in mathematical terns by using 2D lines. It supports Windows operating system.
.ai – Known as “Adobe Illustrator File”, it is used to edit vector graphics, composed paths that are connected with points, is also used for logos and print media. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.bmp – Known as “Bitmap Image File”, it is uncompressed raster image that is comprised of rectangular grid of pixels and also contains file header, bitmap pixel with different colors. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.drw - Also known as “Drawing File”, it is used for generic drawing file format, that are used by many programs. Helpful in storing the image in vector file format that use to represent image in place of dots. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.dwg – Known as “AutoCAT Drawing Database File”, it is used to create 2D or 3D drawing, it is the popular vector image that are used to store the both design and metadata that becomes easy to describe the file content that are related to .DXF file format and is ASCII version of DMG. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.dxf - Also known as “Drawing Exchange Format File”, It has data format that are developed by Autodesk and used for computer aided design, vector image files. Basically it is similar to the .DWG format but on the other hand is more compatible with other program because it is ASCII based text. It supports Mac OS, Windows operating system and Linux.
.eps – Also known as “Encapsulated PostScript File”, it contains 2D vector graphics, text and bitmap images not only is this but it also include an embedded preview image in bitmap file format. It supports Mac OS, Windows operating system and Linux.
.gif – Known as “Graphical Interchange Format File”, It contains up to 256 indexed colors not only is this but ahs predefined set of colors that may be adapted in the images colors. It is one of the most graphics for Web graphics that comprises small images and those images that contain text. It supports Mac OS, Windows operating system and Linux.
.indd – Known as “Adobe InDesign File”, it is professional layout project that are created with Adobe InDesign. It contains page format information, page content, linked files flyers, magazines, etc. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.jpg – Known as “JPEG Image File”, it is compressed image format and is basically used for storing digital photos by supporting 24-bit color. It is also used publishing Web graphics. It supports Mac OS, Linux and Windows operating system.
.pct – Known as “Picture File”, it stores images that are stored in Macintosh PICT format. This has been developed by Apple in 1984 used for storing images by using Apple QuickDraw technology. It contains image format in one or two formats but in original format it stores 8 colors. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.pdf - Also Known as “Portable Document Format File”, it is a class-platform document that are created by Adobe Acrobat. This is mainly used for e-mail attachment or saving publication in standard format. It may also contain forms, images, text, data and outline. It supports Linux, Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.pln – Also known as “ArchiCAD Project File”, it is a solo project file that comprises of 3Dmodel. It is basically used by the architects for designing building structures, exteriors, interiors and landscapes. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.png – Also known as “Portable Network Graphic”, in this extension the image files are stored. It contains bitmap or indexed colors and without copyright limitations company uses it to store graphics for web images. It supports Linux, Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.ps – Also known as “PostScript File”, it may contain vector graphics, text and raster graphics and can be printed directly by a Post printer, without application being opened or operated. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.psd – Also known as “Photoshop Document”, it is created by Adobe Photoshop and is commonly used by professional image editing program. It may also include layer masks, adjustment layers, image layers, file information, annotation notes etc. It supports Windows operating system, Linux and Mac OS.
.psp – Also known as “Paint Shop Pro Image File” In this the color is saved as native Paint shop that includes layers, vector path, guides, metadata and many other object in the image file. It supports Windows operating system.
.qxd – Known as “QuarkXPress Document”, it contains formatted images and text and page layout properties. It has been created using QuarkXPress 5. In this the layouts are used for publication, magazines, brochures, books. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.qxp – Also known as “QuarkXPress Project File”, it contains page layout information, images, texts, single or multiple pages. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.rels – Also known as “Open Office XML Relationships File”, it is the file that are contained within MS Open Office XML documents, it contains XML specification and its relationship is declared with XML. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.svg – Also known as “Scalable Vector Graphics File”, it is two dimensional vector that are formatted by World Wide Web Consortium. It displays vector graphics on web and describes the images that uses text format based on XML. It supports Linux, Windows operating system and Mac OS.
.thm - Known as “Thumbnail Image File”, it is small sized icon that represents large image that are basically used on Web and in clip art. Not only is this but this is also produced by some digital camera for capturing images. It supports Mac OS and Windows operating system.
.tif – Known as “Tagged Image File”, this is one of the most high graphic format that are often used for storing images with many colors. It can be saved as uncompressed format and it may also incorporate .jpeg compression. It supports Windows operating system and Mac OS.
